Understanding Phonemic Awareness
Phonics is a method for teaching people how to read and write an alphabetic language by demonstrating the relationship between the sounds of the spoken language (phonemes) and the letters or groups of letters (graphemes) that represent them.
Instead of teaching kids to memorize whole words (like "cat" as a single sight shape), phonics teaches children to decode words by breaking them down into sounds (c - a - t), blending them together to sound out the full word. This gives children a powerful tool to sound out unfamiliar words automatically.
How This Curriculum Works
Our sequence follows the systematic Jolly Phonics-inspired group method, starting with simple consonants and short vowels, moving forward to blends, digraphs, and vowel teams. Children learn using three complementary methods:
